Audubon and Teachers Workshop

Employ bird survey methods to observe and count bird species at the wildlife preserve. Analyze distribution between habitat types.
Location: Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve.

RCD education programming at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve is underwritten by the San Fernando Valley Audubon Society. Our partnership with the local chapter is one of the longest-running and most successful of its kind in the Los Angeles area.

“Water, Wetlands and Wildlife” is a free workshop designed for teachers in grades 4 to 6, who are planning to bring their students to the wildlife reserve for the first time.

Scheduled for the first Saturday in November, the workshop is an opportunity for teachers to enhance their knowledge of wetland ecology while preparing for this field trip experience.

The free workshop comes with an Audubon grant, covering the program fee for a field trip to the basin (not including transportation). Depending on group size, this is a value ranging from $400 to $460.

As many as 70 students may participate in a single program. Two fourth and fifth-grade teachers must apply per school to achieve the required minimum number. Sixth grade teachers may apply singly.

Teachers who have taken the workshop once may apply for an Audubon program grant in the future without having to repeat the workshop.
